THE MEN’S CLUB
“SKINNY”
By the time October rolls around, it symbolizes a New Year. We have had our large Rosh Hashanah dinners with family and friends; we have broken the fast with our traditional bagels and smoked fish and we are getting ready for the fall and winter seasons. Also, by the time you are reading this article, the Men’s Club has already had three very successful events. You will also notice a continuous push for new members from our groups and the Men’s Club is no exception.
As I began to write my articles, I am always at a loss on how many commercials I should add into my article. So I am going to limit this article to one commercial. So here is the commercial:
We have a unique Paid-Up Membership dinner which is guaranteed to be the most amazing, breath defying, heart stopping, delicious and unique event the Men’s Club has undertaken. So, hopefully, I have gotten your attention. We are going to TAILGATE exactly like our Penn State Alumni have done many times at Happy Valley. We will put to shame all the EAGLES Tailgaters. So bring your favorite team jersey, sweater, hoody and get ready for a Tailgate party Ohev style. We are going to have tables full of juicy, messy, and finger lickin BBQ (yes it will be Kosher) – ribs, chicken, burgers, salads, desserts, corn, and best of all, ESPN’s Jody Mac will be our speaker. Come to our Tailgate Tent (for those who are wondering it is not in the parking lot – it will be in our Social Hall) and prepare for a feast. But you have to be a paid up member. Don’t be left out in the cold. We’ll have sports talk and sports food. Email me at mike.markowitz@verizon.net to RSVP and more importantly have your wife write your $45.00 check. The date will be November 13 ( A day before my 50th – so bring gifts). Our Goal is to break the record of 100 Tailgaters.
Now back to the article. I want to challenge everyone in our Ohev community to reach out and introduce each other to folks you do not know. I am amazed that after 22 years in the Synagogue, there are folks to whom I have never said hello and to whom I have not introduced myself. So, if you see a good looking gentleman dragging a very good looking wife, walking up to you with his hand extended – it is me and my goal is to meet everyone. I am always at Friday night services and most Sunday Minyans. Please don’t run away. I am not asking for money and not asking you to join our Men’s Club. I am just trying to enhance our Ohev Community. And, maybe, you can be my guest at our next event.

Mission
The Ohev Shalom Men’s Club is
a vehicle for expanding the role of the synagogue in the lives
of men, and the role of men in the life of the Synagogue. Our
mission is to respond to the special needs of men in the
Congregation, while contributing to the spiritual, religious,
and cultural needs of the Congregation. Our themes are “Social,
Sports, Speakers, and Spiritual”. Specifically, the purpose of
the Men’s Club is to:
-
Explore our “own
spirituality” and make a “safe space” where we may talk about
male issues as Jews.
-
Give men a place for
enhancing personal Jewish pride.
-
Create opportunities for
male camaraderie through social and athletic programming.
-
Provide
programs on Jewish ethics in the workplace, programs on men’s
health issues, and programs that teach men to be better
fathers and husbands.
Dues
Ohev Shalom Men’s
Club Membership dues for the year 5769 (2008-2009 are $36.00.
Dues are used for social, religious, cultural, educational, and
sports programming. These funds also go towards B’nai Mitzvah,
Confirmants and other student educational gifts and programs as
well as for the development of other activities and fundraisers,
including Yom Ha’Shoah fund raising and Holocaust educational
programs such as the speaker program we sponsored a few years
ago featuring the curator from the Anne Frank House in
Amsterdam. Educational efforts are also supported like the
program we sponsored for the junior high school and high school
students on the Messianic Jewish movement and how to deal with
it.
The
membership dues form is online.
